As part of my regular Scripture intake I am reading through the Psalms. I should note that this is supplemental to reading other passages in Scripture. I think the Psalms are important to study and read, but too often I find that people spend all of their daily reading in the Psalms and Proverbs and then wonder why they do not know much about Jesus, the gospel, or the life of obedience that God has called them to, but I digress.
I am in Psalm 119 right now. It is one of my favorites. It is divided up into sections of eight verses that correspond with each of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Psalm 119:9-16 is especially challenging.
9How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
10With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
11I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
12Blessed are you, O LORD;
teach me your statutes!
13With my lips I declare
all the rules of your mouth.
14In the way of your testimonies I delight
as much as in all riches.
15I will meditate on your precepts
and fix my eyes on your ways.
16I will delight in your statutes;
I will not forget your word.
I wanted to share this with you today because it lays out the clear answer and solution for how you and I can live a holy and God-glorifying life. We must guard our way according to God’s word. We must store God’s word in our hearts (memorize Scripture). We must meditate on his word day and night and find delight in this.
For many of us, we want to overcome temptation and sin. We want to get out of a depressive state and have joy in our lives and we look for solutions and answers in all of the wrong places. Go to Scripture. When we study Scripture in-depth we learn that God is all satisfying. The delight of our heart is changed and we are filled with joy as we come to know our immutable God more intimately.
Open up his words. Read them. Soak them up. See God revealed in them. You will not be disappointed.
