So I am reading a new book.  It is entitled How the Mighty Fall by Jim Collins.  Many of us around here have read his first two books – Built to Last and Good to Great about the most common characteristics of enduring companies and how really good companies can be really great companies, respectively.  Collins seeks to use empirical data to compile the most common characteristics of enduring organizations.  In this most recent book he seeks to implement the same process in an effort to understand why really good organizations – even great ones – go into decline and sometimes even ‘go completely under.’  The goal, of course, is to assess your own organization and to ensure you don’t fall into the same traps so clearly stumbled into by so many who are no longer around.  It is a quick read, but filled with many profound nuggets that will leave you pondering for days about certain aspects of whatever organization you are currently invested in.  Oh, and by the way, it becomes very clear that much of what he discovers are biblical themes connected to that Fall of man and our tendency to self-destruct without even realizing it.
