Tired? Weary? Exhausted?

by Mike Reed, Director of Student Ministries @ MBC Loudoun

I was reading Isaiah 40 last night with my wife, and at the end of the chapter I came to the oh-so-familiar verse in 29-31 “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength…but they who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

“Wow, that’s a great promise” I thought to myself, however we must not miss where these verses fall in light of all that Isaiah is saying. In verse 9 Isaiah begins to describe the Greatness of our God, the type of God we serve, his amazing power and might. Look at just a few of the ways he describes our God prior to verses 29-31:

  • He measured the water in the hallow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span (verse 12)
  • The nations are like a drop in a bucket to Him (verse 15)
  • The nations are nothing before Him (verse 17)
  • We are not to compare God to anything for He is far greater than all things (verse 18)
  • He sits above the circle of the earth, he stretched out the heavens like a curtain (verse 22)
  • He brings princes to nothing (verse 23)
  • He names each star by name because of his greatness and power no one is missing (verse 26)

Now let’s go back to this amazing promise in 29-31. Now take a minute and think about Isaiah 40:29-31. THIS is the God who supplies us strength when we are weary and discouraged and tired and exhausted. THIS is the God who is MORE than capable at handling our problems of the day. THIS is the God who sits above the circle of the earth, stretched out the heavens like a curtain, named each star, measures the oceans with his hand, and sees the nations of this world as a drop in a bucket compared to Him.

He is able to sustain you, He will do it, draw into Him today to find your strength, He is big enough, smart enough, wide enough, sovereign enough, massive enough, good enough, strong enough, wise enough, great enough, amazing enough to say he will do what He says He will do.
